Velvet Innovation: Great Projects Never Happen in Isolation
A bioinformatician, a software engineer and a farmer walk into a meetup – this isn't the start of a joke. It's an example of how a collaboration begins that might one day solve a global problem. Which is exactly why Velvet Innovation exists.

A researcher spent three years on a project that could change the way we diagnose rare diseases. The results are sitting on her computer. She has colleagues who understand the field. But maybe she's stuck wondering how to get those results out of the computer and into the world. Where does she start? Who does she even ask for help? A creative who designs products for multinational companies keeps wondering whether his approach could serve something more meaningful. A computer science student has an idea for an app, but isn't sure it's even worth pursuing. A founder launching their second venture is looking for people to talk to directly – whether that's teammates or potential customers. And that gap – between an idea and the first step, between research and the real world, between intention and collaboration – is exactly what Velvet Innovation actively fills.What is Velvet Innovation
If an innovator had, at some point in the past, started building a breakthrough discovery alone in a lab, they'd probably still be working on it today. Big things never happen in isolation, and plenty of good ideas never make it out into the world. Often simply because the right connection never happened. Or because someone never got feedback from outside their own field.Velvet Innovation is an open community and values-driven platform that connects innovators, startup founders, researchers, entrepreneurs, creatives and others who want to build things with impact. It grew out of the South Moravian innovation ecosystem, but it isn't closed off to Brno and its surroundings. It's open to anyone who shares the same values and wants to be part of an environment where people think about innovation differently. Within Velvet Innovation, people from different fields meet, share their projects and experiences, and work out the next steps together.

What happens at the Velvet Innovation Meetup
The community meets every third Thursday of the month at the Velvet Innovation Meetup. It's not your typical networking event with business cards changing hands. It's a place where people gather around specific things – projects, topics, challenges, questions.
Every Meetup includes pitching: people from the community present their projects, ideas and solutions. They get feedback, connections, and an outside perspective. Sometimes people just come to check whether their project makes sense to people outside their own field.
The Meetup has a community feel – anyone interested in innovation can come. The atmosphere is open: no hierarchy, no need to prove you're „big enough“. A researcher sits next to a founder, a student next to a seasoned entrepreneur.
From conference to festival
Under the Velvet Innovation brand, we used to hold the Velvet Innovation Conference every year – a larger international event that gave space to innovators, ideas and collaboration. Starting in June 2027, this format is transforming into a festival. It's a natural opening-up of the platform to a wider audience: toward an event that makes more room for community, experience and diversity. More fields, more formats, more opportunities – for people who are already at home in innovation, and for those just starting to find their way in.
Velvet Innovation lives online too
The community doesn't just meet once a month offline. Velvet Innovation also exists in the online space – through people's stories, their projects, and digital communication. On social media, we share the stories of innovators and perspectives worth paying attention to. The website velvetinnovation.com is where you'll find various projects, challenges and inspiration.
What kind of innovation does Velvet Innovation support?
We're guided by the following values: responsibility, ambition, harmony, humility and authenticity. We care about projects that solve real problems. Social, environmental, technological, economic, societal. Innovation that creates value – and doesn't create hidden costs that someone else ends up paying. Ambition is part of the platform's DNA. We think locally – but we ask what impact something built in this region could have on the world. Different perspectives and fields exist here side by side, not in a hierarchy. And authenticity? In innovation, being authentic often means saying: „I don't know if this works. Let's find out together.“
The region grows because of people who dare to share ideas. To test them. To change them based on feedback. To connect with others. And to keep pushing their ideas forward – even through uncertainty and doubt. Velvet Innovation is the place where people like that discover they're not alone. The strength of the community lies in the mix: different fields, experiences and perspectives meeting in one place.
