Global Boiling: A Documentary Series Showing Climate Adaptation in Action
By 2050, climate zones in Czechia are expected to shift roughly 300 metres uphill. What does that mean for South Moravia? “It will be like the Mediterranean, just without the sea. Nice and warm, but a little dry,” says producer Jan Hubáček. Ways to adapt to drought and heat already exist. Yet most of them are known mainly to experts. Many people still believe that there is little we can do about the weather.

Vision

We want to show that climate adaptation is not just a theory for specialists. Across Czechia, people, municipalities and companies are already developing practical solutions to drought and heat. By sharing their stories, we want to bring these ideas beyond expert circles and inspire others to take action.

Gamechanger

Globální var / Global Boiling is an upcoming documentary series for Czech Television. The series explores topics including buildings, urban water management, agriculture, wetlands, energy and communities. Butit does not want to simply showcase completed projects. ‘We want to follow projects as they develop and the people behind them,’ Jan explains. That means capturing real solutions as they take shape, alongside the people making them happen. They work with experts from the Partnership Foundation (Nadace Partnerství) and draw inspiration from its Adapterra Awards project catalogue.

Who is it for?

For Czech Television viewers, including those who have never considered climate adaptation before. And for policymakers, municipalities, businesses and individuals who can make changes to their buildings, streets or landscapes. The aim is to make viewers to come away thinking: This could work where I live, too.

What has worked so far?

Brno-based GNOMON has been operating for ten years and has produced six feature-length documentaries. For Globální var, they are working with Czech Television and the Partnership Foundation. The Ministry of the Environment and Creative Rain are also involved in the project. Around 80 per cent of the budget is already secured. The series aims to reach 200,000 viewers per episode, or two million views in total.
Know a climate adaptation project worth filming? Jan is looking for projects involving buildings, towns and landscapes that will be implemented in 2027–2028. Ideally, they should be visually engaging, easy for non-experts to understand and led by inspiring people who can tell their stories naturally. He is also looking for partners to help cover the remaining 20 per cent of the budget – through general or thematic partnerships, product placement or sponsorship messages.
